1.3. Identification numbers and information labels
Identification number of the car (VIN)
The most important information on the vehicle contains in identification number (VIN). VIN is beaten out on Schild, fixed on the dashboard at the left under a windshield.

Besides, VIN is present at the certified label fixed on a driver's door and is beaten out on a car frame beam under a threshold of a door of the forward passenger.

VIN is used for identification of the car and can be useful at acquisition of spare parts. The producer adheres to the international standards therefore VIN consists of 17 signs and has the following structure (on the example of petrol models):

VIN begins with the international code of producer (World Manufacturer Identifier) which settles down on the first position and consists of three signs.
The letter To means the manufacturing company country (Korea), N serves for designation of make of the car (KIA), the third letter in the international code of the producer indicates category of the car where:
A — the Car
With — the Truck
D — the SUVs and other vehicles falling under categories SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) and MPV (Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle)
E — the Cars intended for the European market
H — Minibuses
J — Ford
It should be noted that the KIA cars of the Russian assembly, in particular production of the CJSC AVTOTOR company, have other international code - H4H. By the way, the appendix #2 to "approval like the vehicle" (the document describing marking of the car) established the following locations of a VIN code: on the plate of the manufacturer; in the luggage compartment, on a vertical wall in a niche of fastening of a jack; on a forward part of a frame on the right side. |
The second position (that is the following two signs) serves for designation like the vehicle. For example, JA = KIA Sportage, FA = KIA Sephia, etc.
The third position (the sixth and seventh signs) indicates option of execution of a body. Concerning KIA Sportage they can be the following:
52 — the Five-door Grand Station wagon
53 — Two-door SUV
54 — the Cabriolet
55, 56 — the Five-door Versatile person
After body type (the fourth position) there is a coding of the engine where
1 — cm3 SOHC 2000 on ethylated gasoline
2 — cm3 SOHC 2000 on unleaded gasoline
3,4,5 — cm3 DOHC 2000 on unleaded gasoline
The fifth position (the ninth sign) declares type of transmission and option of execution of the transmission.
Further, on the sixth position, there is a sign of the indication of year of release of the car: the system of "production chronology" at KIA differs in nothing from other automobile producers:
R — 1994
S — 1995
T — 1996

W — 1998
X \19991999
Y — 2000
1 — 2001
2 — 2002
It is possible to determine the place of production and the market of realization of the car by the letter standing on the seventh position:
A — Asan, for realization in domestic market
S — Soari, for realization in domestic market
5 — Asan, export option
6 — Soari, export option
K — Asia
Closes a VIN code, on traditions, six-digit serial number of a product.

Number of a body (chassis) is beaten out on a back partition of a motive compartment.
